Design and Aesthetics

The Hyundai VENUE is a subcompact SUV; the Crosstrek competes in the compact category. As a result, you’ll find the VENUE has slightly smaller dimensions. Despite its size, it competes well against the Crosstrek. From the curb, the Hyundai VENUE has a modern style and athletic proportions. Projector halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights let you see and be seen, while heated outside mirrors and roof rails add convenience and versatility. Its subcompact size makes it the ideal urban adventure vehicle, quickly zipping through Fort Worth streets and in and out of tight parking spaces. The Subaru Crosstrek sports a modern yet more rugged design. It features Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system, Boxer engine, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Wilderness trim has more rugged off-road equipment and enhanced tech, which you’ll find appealing if you love leaving the pavement behind.

Interior Comfort and Technology

The VENUE’s spacious cabin provides comfort for five passengers. Lower models have premium cloth upholstery available in various colors, while the top trim combines leatherette and cloth with heated front seats. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob add refined style, and the 60/40-split folding back seat offers multiple cargo/passenger configurations. The VENUE’s in-vehicle tech runs through an 8.0-inch touch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth enable smartphone syncing and hands-free operation. The Crosstrek’s roomy cabin seats five people. Cloth upholstery varies on the lower trims: The Sport model features yellow contrast stitching, while the top-tier Limited trim offers leather-trimmed seats with orange contrast stitching. The Wilderness trim features Subaru’s water-repellent StarTex synthetic upholstery with the beauty of leather and increased durability. You’ll also find a 60/40-split folding rear seat in the Crosstrek. There’s a 7.0-inch touch screen in the Crosstrek’s Base trim and an 11.6-inch version in every other model. Subaru preloads Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology for convenience.

Performance and Drivetrain

Hyundai installed its Smartstream 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing technology and intelligent variable transmission. This powertrain produces 121 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque. The VENUE has a capable front-wheel-drive platform and normal, snow, and sport drive modes. All models are fuel-efficient: The EPA estimates the VENUE gets 29 mpg on city streets, 33 on the highway, and 31 combined. The Crosstrek’s Base and Premium models feature Subaru’s 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder Boxer engine and Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission. This powertrain puts out 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The EPA rates this engine at 27 mpg on surface roads and 34 on the freeway. The top Crosstrek models upgrade to a 2.5-liter Boxer engine with 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain gets 26 mpg around town and 33 on the Texas interstates. Every Crosstrek includes Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system. This technology mounts the components lower in the vehicle, giving a center of gravity that provides a more stable performance. Models with a 2.0-liter engine feature the X-MODE system, while top models have a dual X-MODE variant. This AWD technology enhances traction and reduces wheel spin on low-friction surfaces.

Safety Features and Driver-Assistance Technology

Hyundai includes its SmartSense suite of driver-assist technologies in every VENUE. The system’s specialized sensors and radar scan around your vehicle and alert you to potential hazards. In some situations, they will engage emergency brake support or steering correction to help you mitigate or avoid a collision. The suite includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, which warns you of any vehicles or pedestrians in your way and engages emergency brake support if you react slowly. The blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert use sensors to scan your blind spots on either side and behind, alerting you to obstacles. They give you more confidence When changing lanes and reversing. A lane-keep assist system tracks road markers and uses subtle steering input to help you stay centered. Rear occupant alert and driver attention warning remind you to check your back seat before exiting the vehicle and take a break when you appear drowsy. Subaru has its EyeSight suite of driver-assist systems, which are similar to the VENUE’s collection. Pre-collision braking detects hazards, alerts you, and brakes if necessary. An automatic emergency steering system can help you with evasive maneuvers if it determines there’s enough time and space. Adaptive cruise control, which you can manually set and adjust, maintains optimum speed and a safe distance from other vehicles.

Cargo Space and Versatility

The VENUE has 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. With the back seat folded down, you get a maximum cargo capacity of 31.9 cubic feet, allowing you to carry loads of gear on your urban excursions. Behind the Crosstrek’s back seat, you have 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space — 54.7 when you fold the rear seat flat. That’s plenty of space for camping gear on your next getaway.
