Hyundai Unveils First In-Vehicle Fingerprint Technology

January 23rd, 2019 by

While many new cars today allow you to start the engine without putting a key in the ignition, Hyundai’s new in-vehicle fingerprint technology will let you unlock and start your car with just your fingerprint. Hyundai plans to put this technology in the 2019 Santa Fe available this spring.

With this technology, the driver will be able to unlock the door by touching a sensor located on the door handle. Then, to start the engine, just touch the ignition button equipped with a fingerprint scanner. Hyundai says the chance of the system misrecognizing a driver’s fingerprint is only one in 50,000, which is much better than traditional keys and even smart keys.

Along with additional security, this technology will also give drivers a more personalized experience behind the wheel. Once a driver sets up his or her driving preferences initially, including seating and mirror positions, the fingerprint recognition system will automatically make those adjustments whenever they enter the car.

“In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research & Development Division of the Hyundai Motor Company.
