Independence Gardens

Founded in 2013, Independence Gardens is a parent-led nonprofit organization connecting children with food through actionable, impactful nutrition education programs in partnership with schools and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth community. Through its programming and educational outreach, Independence Gardens helps children build the connection between the food they grow and the food they eat while helping them develop healthy eating habits.

Programming includes the Apple Project, an edible outdoor learning space, and Come and Eat IT, a live cooking event led by local chefs that encourages children to enhance their nutrition education.

You can support the mission and work of Independence Gardens in the community in the following ways:

  • Donate: Your monetary contributions to Independence Gardens enable this nonprofit to create new outdoor learning space gardens and support hands-on nutritional programs, such as Come and Eat IT.
  • Volunteer: If you’re eager to get your hands in some dirt, you can help Independence Gardens bring new outdoor garden learning spaces to a network of schools across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas

Since 1968, the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas has helped those in crisis find hope for the future. Although the organization maintains its base in Dallas, the center responds to calls from people throughout the Dallas Fort-Worth area and operates two national-crisis-help telephone lines. Every month, 1,500 people contact the 24-hour crisis line and are connected with caring, trained counselors.

The Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas also maintains Survivors of Suicide, a support group led by trained counselors for surviving families and friends of individuals who have committed suicide. In addition, a crisis debriefing service dispatches counselors to schools and businesses within 48 hours of a suicide. These counselors meet with and provide support to groups of people affected by the suicide.

You can donate to or volunteer with this nonprofit:

  • Donate: By making a gift of financial support, you enable the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas to save lives and raise awareness about suicide in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
  • Volunteer: Dedicated volunteers are the lifeline for people in crisis. The center conducts training classes for its 24-hour crisis line twice a year. Following an extensive 10-week training program, volunteers commit themselves to one three- to four-hour shift per week for at least six months.
