What Is New With Hyundai’s EV 2023 Lineup?

To facilitate this, the company has launched a dedicated EV sub-brand called Ioniq and developed a range of specialized electric technologies. By 2025, the company will offer a stunning 23 different battery-electric models, making it one of the most sustainability-oriented manufacturers in the world.

Hyundai’s EV Technology

Hyundai has been a leader in groundbreaking EV technology for years. In 2020, the company unveiled the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), a dedicated EV platform. This modular system consists of a battery pack under the cabin and a combined motor, inverter, and transmission. This unique design can be modified to accommodate a wide variety of body styles and drive types and is the basis for Ioniq and other Hyundai EVs. The platform will also be used by Genesis, a sub-brand of Hyundai and Kia.

These are some of the most notable features of Hyundai’s E-GMP:

Modularity

The E-GMP platform was designed as a one-size-fits-all solution to EV design and manufacturing. It uses a modular design and expandable wheelbase that can accommodate various body styles. At the moment, Hyundai has plans to use the platform in sedan, crossover, and SUV models.

Range

Maximizing range is one of the greatest challenges EV designers and drivers face. Hyundai has tackled this problem head-on with its E-GMP platform. According to Kia, the design will allow ranges of 311 miles or more on a full charge, although this number will vary based on the model.

Quick Charging

Hyundai vehicles are leaders in the field of ultra-fast charging. E-GMP vehicles are some of the fastest-charging vehicles out there and can use a 400- or 800-volt charger without modification. With the 800-volt charger, E-GMP vehicles can reach a full charge in 18 minutes. They can also accumulate about 62 miles worth of electricity in five minutes.

Safety

One of the benefits of traditional auto design is the shock absorption of the engine block. This has traditionally formed a layer of protection for passengers during accidents. With EVs, the need for a front-mounted engine has disappeared, and designers have been forced to find new safety solutions. The E-GMP platform includes an eight-point battery mounting that absorbs shock and prevents damage inside the cabin. It also features an ultra-high-strength steel frame and a low center of gravity for greater stability.

Design Flexibility

The E-GMP system uses an extremely simple layout, with the battery pack under the car’s body and the motors between the wheels. This opens up a large amount of space in the cabin and allows for creative interior design.

2023 Ioniq 5

Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 as the first vehicle in its Ioniq sub-brand lineup this year. One of the most noticeable features of the Ioniq 5 is its futuristic styling that breaks with the traditional Hyundai design. It features a mix of sleek curves, hard angles, and minimalist aesthetics that make it a truly eye-catching vehicle. The Ioniq 5 is a compact crossover that uses E-GMP, Hyundai’s innovative, dedicated EV platform. In its standard configuration, the vehicle uses a rear-wheel drive design and a 58-kWh battery pack that provides 220 miles of range and 168 horsepower.

The 2022 models are also available with a long-range battery pack that offers up to 303 miles and a four-wheel-drive configuration that provides 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. Each vehicle in the family is also capable of quick charging with a 400- or 800-volt charger. Since the car is still very new, the 2023 range will likely be mostly similar, with some new trims added.

2023 Ioniq 6

The 2023 Ioniq 6 will be the first sedan in Hyundai’s Ioniq lineup. The company has announced that future Ioniq models will be named sequentially. SUVs and crossovers will receive odd numbers, while sedans will receive even numbers. While not much about the vehicle has been revealed, the Ioniq 6 will also use E-GMP and sport a completely redesigned exterior based on the Prophecy concept revealed in 2020.

2023 Kona

Hyundai is currently working on a next-gen, all-electric redesign of their classic compact crossover, the Kona. Very little is known about this vehicle currently, but it will likely share technology with Hyundai’s other offerings and feature sleek, updated styling.

2024 Ioniq 7

The Ioniq 7 will be the next vehicle in the Ioniq line of SUVs, but we have a while to wait until its release. The company has released a concept that shows a radically futuristic design with unique lighting and lines. It will be a larger design than the compact Ioniq 5, and Hyundai aims to create “a lining space on wheels” by taking advantage of the E-GMP’s unique layout.
